Fibromyalgia, also known as fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), is a condition characterised by widespread pain throughout the body. Individuals with fibromyalgia may also experience other symptoms such as extreme fatigue, insomnia, heightened sensitivity to pain, muscle stiffness, headaches, difficulties with concentration and memory, mood issues, anxiety, depression, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Research has shown that women are more likely to develop fibromyalgia than men. While there is no known cure for fibromyalgia, certain therapies such as osteopathy and physiotherapy can help alleviate symptoms. Additionally, medications may be prescribed to manage the condition.

The root cause of fibromyalgia has not yet been determined. However, it is believed to be associated with abnormal levels of certain chemicals in the brain and changes in how the central nervous system processes pain messages throughout the body. The central nervous system comprises the brain, nerves, and spinal cord.

Some individuals may have a higher risk of developing fibromyalgia due to inherited genes. Emotionally or physically stressful events can also trigger the onset of fibromyalgia, such as major surgery, injury, the loss of a loved one, or relationship problems.
