Colitis is a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Like Crohn’s disease, it’s a lifelong condition which causes inflammation in parts of the digestive system.

The symptoms of colitis typically include:

  • Episodes of sudden diarrhoea
  • Frequent bowel movements
  • Bleeding from the rectum
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Weight loss
  • Fever
  • Tiredness

Due to the nature of the symptoms, which can be embarrassing, they are often not openly discussed, resulting in some individuals suffering in silence.

While the symptoms are often mild, in other cases, they can become life-threatening and may require hospital treatment to prevent dehydration and other complications.
